Gothenburg is not a grid, which is exactly why it is worth seeing drawn. Dutch engineers laid the old town out inside a moat in the seventeenth century, the Gota alv cuts the city from its northern half at Hisingen, and the archipelago trails away to the southwest in a scatter of bare granite islands that no list of names conveys. What the map makes obvious is how tight the historic core is: almost everything inside the moat sits within a few minutes of Gustaf Adolfs Torg, Haga and Linnestaden are a short walk south west of it, and Liseberg is one tram ride out. The archipelago looks far on paper and is about twenty minutes past the end of the tram line at Saltholmen. Gothenburg distances mislead in both directions. The walk from Gustaf Adolfs Torg to Haga looks longer than it is and takes about twenty minutes. The archipelago islands look far and are a tram ride plus a ferry on one ordinary ticket. And Hisingen, which most visitors treat as another district, is the far bank of the river and a bridge or a river ferry away.
